You either live in or were recently visiting New Orleans, and you stumbled upon a small token: a magnet charm made from a bottle cap, a bean, and resin, with a string and tag tied around it. You probably thought it was a quaint, cute gift left by a stranger.
What you discovered is a Lovebean, and finding this charm means you have a promise to keep. The Lovebean isn’t just a decoration to go on your refrigerator to commemorate your trip to the French Quarter. No, it’s more than that. I want you to do something nice for your community as payment for my creation, labor, and concealment of this token.
The good deed can be large or small. It can involve giving a few dollars to someone in need or something considerably more sacrificial. It’s up to you.
But the Lovebean also comes with a promise from me. For each Lovebean I hide, I will also perform a good deed in my community here in New Orleans. As of the time of writing this post (late April 2025), I have already performed 40 deeds, ranging from donating books to Little Free Libraries to providing bags filled with food, water, and cash to those in need.
In other words, we are both doing something positive for our communities, effectively doubling the impact of the Lovebean. If you’re so inclined, keep it going by hiding this charm in your own neighborhood.
